Bad Referees Make Bad Games

I’m not saying that Holland would have won had the card situation been different. However, I think the referee went way over the line and completely lost control over the game. According to the commentators, the number of cards handed out ties the record for most cards given in World Cup history. Unbelievable, eh?

The game turned really aggressive during the second half, and there was certainly a lot of unnecessary drama. I think that Portugal spent much of the second half trying to delay the game with “injuries”. At the same time, even though Holland had a one man advantage throughout most of the second half, they were unable to complete any of their multiple scoring opportunities. And although van Nistelrooij’s performance has been a bit lackluster recently, he should have been given a few minutes of playing time.

The ref sucked, bottom line.

Yeah, 16 yellow cards ties the record (which was established last time in Korea, I think). 4 reds is a new record for the most sendings off in a World Cup finals match. That (Russian) ref never really had a good grip on the game right from the start…

Sorry about that Ferd! But we’ll take care of Scolari and his dastardly bunch next week (fingers crossed!). I would have felt bad having to eliminate Holland… ;-)
